The music and entertainment industry is huge. As of 2016 it brought in $17.2 billion globally. Like most industries the ranks of the top executives are dominated by men. However, there are powerful women behind the scenes in the industry as well. One of these is Desiree Perez, the chief operating officer of Roc Nation. She was recently named on the Women in Music list put together by Billboard, for example. The Billboard list names the top women in the industry including influencers and dealmakers who handle everything from producing records, negotiating contracts, and discovering new talent.
Desiree Perez has acquired a reputation as being one of the toughest negotiators in the music and entertainment industry. The company she is a top executive for, Roc Nation, publishes music for the artist in their stable. They also handle managing their tours, film, tv, and merchandising contracts. They also invest in startups in the industry. Some of the artists whose new businesses they have financially supported include Shakira, NO ID, Santigold, and Calvin Harris.
It was in 2009 that Desiree Perez joined Roc Nation, a company founded by Jay-Z. Prior to this she had a top role at another one of his companies, SC Enterprises. She has been one of the main drivers of his business expansion in the music and entertainment industry. Altogether she has been working with Jay-Z for 22 years.
One of her biggest deals was for the musician Rihanna. When she wanted to put on her Anti tour she turned to Desiree Perez to handle the details. Perez ended up negotiating a $25 million deal between Rihanna and Samsung. She also put together the $200 deal that Roc Nations signed with Live Nation in April 2017, another big success for the company.
