From Public Giant to Private Company Michael Polk’s Leadership Shift

Leading a company with global scale is a fundamentally different task than running a leaner, privately held operation. Michael Polk, the former CEO of Newell Brands, has done both and the contrast has shaped his philosophy on what makes leadership effective.

Polk spent more than 40 years in executive roles before stepping away from Newell Brands in 2019. His retirement, however, was short-lived. He returned to work to lead Implus, a smaller private equity-owned business, where the demands on a CEO look nothing like they did at a public conglomerate.

The Weight of Public Company Leadership

In a large public company, a CEO’s time is pulled in multiple directions at once. Michael Polk Newell Brands dedicated approximately 30 percent of his time at a public company to investors and public markets alone. The job becomes one of orchestration aligning thousands of people behind a shared plan while managing external scrutiny and quarterly expectations.

That level of accountability sharpens a leader’s focus. But it also creates distance between the CEO and the day-to-day work happening inside the organization. “You’re typically working through other people and leading through other people to get things done,” Polk notes. The higher up the structure, the more abstract the impact can feel.

A Hands-On Role at Implus

At Implus, Michael Polk operates with a different kind of proximity. He works directly alongside marketing teams, helps design commercial programs, and participates actively in go-to-market planning. The talent at Implus is younger and less experienced, which he sees as an opportunity rather than a drawback.

“While the talent in my company is hungry and competitive, they tend to be younger and have less breadth of experience,” Polk says. Developing that talent means modeling the behaviors he wants to see not just setting direction from above. For Polk, that kind of involvement is energizing, not exhausting.
