Michael Polk Compares Talent at Big and Small Firms

Forty years in corporate leadership gave Michael Polk Newell Brands a broad view of how talent differs across company types. Having led teams at Kraft, Unilever, and Newell Brands before taking the helm at Implus, he has firsthand experience managing both seasoned corporate veterans and a younger, less experienced workforce.

Deep Experience at Large Public Companies

At major public firms, Polk worked alongside talent pools built over decades, with employees who had climbed through established structures and understood the demands of operating at scale. That depth of experience allowed him to delegate confidently, trusting other leaders throughout Newell Brands and Unilever to carry out plans without constant oversight. The tradeoff, he has noted, came in the form of layers of process that could slow down decision making.

The picture looks different at Implus. Michael Polk describes his current team as competitive and eager to prove themselves, though generally younger and with less breadth of experience than the executives he worked with earlier in his career. Rather than viewing that gap as a weakness, Polk treats it as an opportunity to mentor directly, staying closely involved in marketing, sales, and go to market planning so employees can learn through daily collaboration rather than distant oversight.

That contrast, deep experience paired with slower movement versus energy paired with a shorter track record, has shaped how Michael Polk approaches leadership today. He now spends more of his time modeling behavior for his team instead of simply directing from above, a shift he attributes largely to the makeup of the Implus workforce compared to the more established teams he once led at larger public companies.

Managing that gap well, in Polk’s view, requires patience rather than frustration. A younger team may need more guidance early on, but the payoff comes as employees grow into their roles faster than they might at a company with more rigid, established structures already in place.
