Michael Polk on Lessons From Private Company Leadership
Michael Polk has spent his career moving between some of the largest names in consumer goods, from Kraft Foods and Unilever to his eventual role as chief executive of Newell Brands. But it is his current position, leading the privately held Implus LLC, that he now describes as one of the most fulfilling chapters of his career.
Leaving the Public Spotlight Behind
Michael Polk Newell Brands retired in 2019 after helping grow its enterprise value from roughly five billion dollars to more than fifteen billion. Rather than stay retired, Michael Polk returned to work in 2020 as CEO of Implus, a fitness accessories company owned by Berkshire Partners with sixteen brands under its umbrella.
The shift required Polk to adjust to a company without the layered management structure he had grown accustomed to. Instead of routing decisions through committees, he now works directly with employees on brand development, sourcing and retail partnerships, an arrangement he has said keeps him closer to the actual business than his public company roles ever did.
A Model Other Executives Might Consider
Michael Polk’s experience suggests that scale is not the only measure of a fulfilling executive role. Staying hands-on at a smaller company, he has found a version of leadership that combines the long range thinking developed over decades with the direct, operational work he enjoyed earlier in his career.
Executives weighing a similar move might take note of how Polk describes his own adjustment. Michael Polk has said the hardest part was not the smaller scale of Implus but learning to trust his own instincts again after years of relying on layers of staff to vet ideas before they reached him, a habit he has since set aside almost entirely.
Polk has said the shift also changed how he measures his own performance day to day. Michael Polk now judges success at Implus by how quickly a good idea reaches customers rather than by the size of the organization behind it, a standard he did not fully embrace until he left Newell Brands and the public company world behind.
