Michael Polk Says Value Creation Defines Every CEO Role
Whether at the helm of a global conglomerate or a smaller private company, Michael Polk Newell Brands says one thing never changes: the job of a chief executive is to create value. The former Newell Brands leader has spent more than 40 years testing that idea across very different corporate settings.
Building a Career at the Top
Polk’s resume includes leadership roles at Kraft, Unilever, and Newell Brands, giving him firsthand experience with the demands of running large public companies. In that world, he says, a CEO’s time is dominated by delegation and resource allocation tied to a broader corporate plan. “You’re typically working through other people and leading through other people to get things done,” he explains. Investor relations also ate up a considerable share of his schedule, with Polk recalling that he spent close to thirty percent of his time engaging with investors and public markets while managing the pressure of quarterly earnings.
A Different Kind of Challenge
After retiring, Michael Polk returned to work in 2019, this time at Implus, a company owned by private equity. The new role demanded a far more hands-on approach. Polk now works directly with marketing and commercial teams on selling systems and go-to-market programs, something he describes as a welcome throwback to earlier years in his career. He also acknowledges that his current team, though driven, is younger and less seasoned than the executives he once led, requiring him to set an example rather than simply direct from above.
Private companies, Polk notes, still need to deliver returns, but the pressure looks different. Owners tend to prioritize long term health over quarterly performance, which opens the door to bolder decisions and bigger bets.
Even with these contrasts, Polk holds firm to a few universal truths about leadership. Accessibility, authenticity, and sharp decision making matter no matter the setting, he says. For Michael Polk, those qualities, combined with a relentless focus on creating value, explain why his approach has worked across such different chapters of his career.
